Sally is the consultant dietitian to the Queensland Academy of Sport (track & field, rowing, & hockey squads) and also the Australian Sports Commission’s National Officiating Program – a program designed to support the most ‘up & coming’ sporting officials and referees in Australia’s national sports. Other consultant work ranges from sweat & hydration testing with the Socceroo’s in the lead-up to their World Cup games, to optimising the nutrition practices of a QLD junior development dirt-bike camp.

For one-on-one consultations, Sally has 2 clinic locations in Brisbane – one at the ‘Gabba Sports Ground (within the Queensland Sports Medicine centre www.qsmc.net.au; the other in West End within a Pilates & physio studio www.pondera.com.au). Further to her days in private practice, she regularly presents sports nutrition seminars to sporting groups, sports coaching workshops, schools and corporate athletes.

A LITTLE HISTORY…

Sally’s interest in sports nutrition began when she was competing nationally as a lightweight rower; as ‘weight-category’ athletes will testify, meticulous attention to food is necessary to achieve a goal weight. As a result, Sally has first-hand experience & empathy for the challenges that face her athletes & weight management clients.

Rowing was replaced with a love of triathlons (an easy transition given the high volume of cross-training required for rowing), and this has been her favoured sport ever since. She now competes in Olympic distance triathlons & half-marathons and will occasionally throw in a half-ironman for good measure.

Her dietetic career began in research, completing an honours thesis on ‘Caffeine use in elite athletes’ in 2005. Following this, she tied her dietetics & exercise science degrees together with the Sports Nutrition Course at the Australian Institute of Sport, and then began consulting to various sporting & personal training groups around Brisbane, as well as working for some years at a weight management clinic.

Following this, she spent a year traveling overseas, which sparked an interest in eating for longevity & health. Her personal food interests lay in sustainable & vegetarian eating styles, and a food philosophy that can be summarised as: “the less processed it is, the better it is for you”.

HOW I CAN HELP YOU…

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: I specialise in ‘getting off the last few kilos’… to get you to a desired race weight or body shape. This can be achieved by a meal plan created specifically for YOU (no stock-standard ‘filing cabinet’ diets!) that accounts for your food preferences, lifestyle, training/exercise habits & long-term health goals.

SPORTS NUTRITION: I can create an individualised training plan that will optimise your performance. Based on this, we can develop your optimal competition nutrition plan. Again, your plan is individualised for YOU; I will give you plenty of options, using a combination of real food & sports foods. We can also look at which supplements best suit you & how to use these strategically to enhance your performance. I am not sponsored by any sports nutrition/supplement companies, so my advice is unbiased, and ‘marketing/hype’ free!

VEGETARIAN/VEGAN MEAL PLANS: How often do you get asked: “are you SURE you’re getting enough protein?” And if it’s not protein, then the concern is over iron, zinc, calcium, and other vital nutrients. If you want to make sure you are ticking all the nutrition boxes with an eating style that omits several food categories, I can help you with this.

DISORDERED EATING: I can work closely with you to normalise eating behaviours. Our goal is for you to be in any given eating situation & you feel confident that you can manage yourself well. I work closely with several highly skilled psychologists that specialise in this area, and their input will be available if needed.
